Who is eligible for VFW membership?
Eligibility requires service in the U.S. Armed Forces, with an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions, or current service. You must also have qualifying service in a war, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil or in hostile waters. Check the official criteria and qualifying awards against your service records.

Can active-duty personnel join the VFW?
Yes. Currently serving personnel can join if they meet the VFW’s qualifying-service requirements. Active-duty status alone does not establish eligibility.
Where can I find official information about joining?
The national VFW joining page explains membership options and provides the official application path. Review its eligibility guidance before applying.

How can veterans find benefits assistance, and is membership required?
Use the national VFW’s VA claims page to locate a VFW Accredited Service Officer for help with claims and appeals. This assistance is free, and VFW membership is not required. The national network assists veterans, service members, families, and survivors; eligibility for individual VA benefits depends on the benefit and circumstances.
